Effectiveness of Senior Year

February 6, 2008

The study group will be exploring ways to make the senior year an even more effective period for students. We will be looking into ways of increasing the attendance rates and decreasing the failure rates for seniors, especially as the year progresses. Systemic changes will be studied as well as techniques all teachers could employ.

After seeing the data that clearly showed the increase in failure rates and absenteeism by seniors in the second semester – and throughout the year in comparison to the other grades – we wanted to see how we could positively impact their learning by making the year a more meaningful experience. This has resulted in the beginnings of plans to make changes to the senior year that are in keeping with culture of the school and the programs in place.

We would like to continue to research the larger issue and create a more detailed plan to address it. If implemented, we would like to study the data that would demonstrate what kind of impact the changes had on attendance and passing rates.
